"Holidays on the Net is a beautifully done collection of multimedia holiday celebrations...More than just works of art, though, each holiday celebration also offers a wealth of information about the holiday, including its history and holiday-related activities."
Christmas in New York: Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting You don’t have to be a New Yorker to enjoy the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree tonight.
While the holiday shoppers have be out in droves and the city is already dressed up in its holiday best, its always the lighting of the tree that officially makes it “Christmas Time in the City!”
So watch tonight on NBC. And if you’re lucky enough to live in the NYC area you can catch the pre-show at 7PM and then the national broadcast at 8PM. That’s 2 whole hours of Holiday Goodness!!
And if you can’t wait for tonight, here’s some of the fun and excitement of last year’s tree lighting (2007).
Special Kids Day
This Elmhurst, Illinois holiday honors children who are developmentally delayed or physically challenged with a special community-wide party, including visits with Santa and gifts for children and their siblings. Even if you don’t live in Elmhurst, today is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the special kids in your community.
World AIDS Day / Day Without Art World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. It’s up to you, me and us to stop the spread of HIV and end prejudice.
Day Without Art (DWA) began on December 1st 1989 as the national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. To make the public aware that AIDS can touch everyone, and inspire positive action, some 800 U.S. art and AIDS groups participated in the first Day Without Art, shutting down museums, sending staff to volunteer at AIDS services, or sponsoring special exhibitions of work about AIDS.
Every year since artists and art institutions throughout the world have taken part in the observances, many closing or covering their artwork with black cloths for the day. While others hold special observances and performances in remembrance for those artists lost to the disease.
The theme of World AIDS Day this year is “Lead ? Empower ? Deliver”. What can you do today?
After the jump we’ll offer some ideas from the AVERTing HIV and AIDS website on how you can support World AIDS Day.
Ideas to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS in your areaWear a red ribbon and ask others to do the same
Protect yourself and your partners - this is the first and best way to stop the spread of HIV. If you are worried - get tested.
At school or work, you can support World AIDS Day by: Having a dressing up, down or fancy dress day Putting up some posters - get people talking Making and selling red ribbons
Organising a creative writing/poster campaign Getting your friends, family, colleagues or pupils to express their feelings and expand their knowledge about AIDS Using your imagination!
Once again its World AIDS day. Another year. Another loss. Another tear.
In observance of World AIDS Day today I’d like to once again dedicate this song - I’l Adore by Boy George - to our friends and loved ones who are no longer with us.
This song was originally released back in 1995. I have always found it difficult to listen to this song. We’ve lost so many to this disease that sometimes the memories are almost too painful to remember. But we must…
And to those we’ve lost: Robert, Marcus, Scott, Roger, John, Stephen, Robert, and the too many others. You are loved. You are missed. You have not been forgotten. Peace.
