Duplicate cast stone replica of authentic Easter Island Rongo Rongo tablet from museum collection of the late Thor Heyerdahl. One of the rare thirty-odd Easter Island tablets extant in collections & museums around the world. "Tangata Manu" Tablet recording the traditional Rapa Nui Legend of the Bird Man. BACKGROUND: THE ENIGMA OF RONGO-RONGO The lost language of Rongo-Rongo has remained a mystery since its discovery and for over a hundred years controversy has raged over the meaning and source of its mysterious pictographic characters. According to legend, the ancient Easter Island ancestor Hoto Matua brought 67 Rongo-Rongo tablets with him containing traditions, genealogical information and other important records of the past. He was said to be accompanied by learned men who knew the art of writing and reciting the ancient inscriptions. The writing was usually inscribed on shaped wooden boards in neat rows about a centimetre high. Alternate lines are written back and forward and upside down, with the end of one line running into the beginning of the next – a system known as boustrophedon, "as the ox ploughs." This means that, starting from the bottom left-hand corner of a tablet, the writing proceeds from left to right but at the end of each line the tablet has to be turned around. The glyphs consist of about 120 basic elements, human figures in various positions, birds, animals, plants, celestial objects and geometrical shapes. These are combined to form between 1500 and 2000 compound signs and are believed to represent a rudimentary phonetic writing system. Many of the motifs are also found in the island’s rock art. Heyerdahl drew particular attention to several South American scripts, particularly the pictographic writing of the Cuna Indians of Panama and northwest Colombia, who recorded songs by painting on wooden tablets. Some of the symbols are identical with those of Easter Island and the script was written in the same boustrophedon style. The writing systems found among the early Aymara and Quechua tribes of the Lake Titicaca area also used boustrophedon. Even the Incas had a writing system with their history recorded on boards which were passed down the generations. Easter Island Rongo Rongo Tablet Easter Island Rongo Rongo Tablet

BACKGROUND

The lost language of Rongo-Rongo has remained a mystery since its discovery and for over a hundred years controversy has raged over the meaning and source of its mysterious pictographic characters.

Alternate lines are written back and forward and upside down, with the end of one line running into the beginning of the next – a system known as boustrophedon, "as the ox ploughs." This means that, starting from the bottom left-hand corner of a tablet, the writing proceeds from left to right but at the end of each line the tablet has to be turned over.

The glyphs consist of about 120 basic elements, human figures in various positions, birds, animals, plants, celestial objects and geometrical shapes. These are combined to form between 1500 and 2000 compound signs and are believed to represent a clever phonetic writing system.
