The Claims of Labour
An Essay on the Duties of the Employers to the Employed
1844 - London - William Pickering
7" by 4.5"; (ix) 174pp.
An uncommon essay on employment, published by William Pickering.
William Pickering (2 April 1796 ? 27 April 1854) was an English publisher, notable for introducing cloth binding to British publishing before 1820.
Pickering began working as an antiquarian bookseller before 1820, and quickly moved into publishing. In 1819 he began his series of Diamond Classics ? small books set in tiny type, that were offered in a uniform binding of cloth or leather at a price the common man could afford.
In a black cloth binding with paper label to the spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Joints are starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. There is an ink inscription to the front pastedown. Overall: GOOD.
