Challah (Bread Machine)

I have a bread machine (2 lb capacity) and I use it every Friday to make my challah dough. (I don't let it bake in the machine, but it does almost all the other work for me.) This is a wonderful, sweet, pareve Challah. Here's the recipe I use:

Put into bread machine in this order:

Ingredients:
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • 2-1/4 tsp yeast (not rapid rise - but the regular jar kind)
  • Scant 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • Scant 1/2 Cup vegetable oil
  • 2 to 3 tsp Salt
  • 1 whole egg + 1 egg yolk
  • 4 Cups flour
Instructions:

  1. Set the machine on Sweet Dough.
  2. After the machine is done, let it the dough rise again in the machine.
  3. Punch it down, take it out, and put it into an oiled bowl and cover it. Let it sit for about an hour.
  4. Punch it down, and make braids.* This will make 2 med loafs or one large loaf.
  5. Put the Challah on greased cookie sheet(s), cover and let rise for an hour.
  6. Before baking, brush with a beaten egg mixed with a bit of water, sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds.
  7. Bake at 325 for 30-45 minutes, until golden brown.

*For Rosh Hashanah do not braid but form the challah into a round shape
