PAUL GETTY The oil businessman signs this document assigning Thomas Dockweiler as his attorney Document signed: "J. Paul Getty" as Trustee, 1p, 8½x11. Paris, France, circa 1956. Headed: "Income Tax Power of Attorney [Individual Return]". Begins, in part: "I, J. Paul Getty, Trustee Under Testamentary Trust of Sarah C. Getty, Dec'd., for the benefit of Jean Ronald Getty,/Presently temporarily residing in Paris, France…being unable by reason of absence from the United States for a continuous period of sixty (60) days…have made, constituted, and appointed…Thomas A.J. Dockweiler, Los Angeles, California…my true and lawful attorney…to file the income tax required by any act or acts of the Legislature of the State of California to be made by me for the taxable year 1956…." Also signed by two witnesses. When Getty's father, GEORGE F. GETTY died in May 1930, he left his son only $500,000 of his estate, which was valued at over $10 million. J.P.'s mother, SARAH GETTY, controlled two thirds of George F. Getty, Inc., which she sold to her son before the year was out (Christmas 1933) for $4.5 million. JEAN RONALD GETTY was the son of Adolphine Helmle, the third of Getty's five wives, whom Getty had married in 1928. In 1916, JEAN PAUL GETTY (1892-1976) and his father had incorporated the Getty Oil Company, an early precursor to the great conglomerate. Getty's multi-state operation went international in 1949 when he completed a deal to lease oil fields in Saudi Arabia. During the Depression Era, Getty had bought extensive quantities of stock and in 1956 he gained control of Pacific Western, which he renamed Getty Oil, ending a 19-year stock battle with Standard Oil. Although he was one of the world's richest men, Getty had a legendary reputation for miserliness, perhaps stemming from his childhood, when his father gave him only a small allowance and encouraged him to "pinch pennies". Jean Ronald was all but excluded from the family trust by his father, and one of Getty's other sons, Gordon Peter Getty (from his marriage to fourth wife Ann Rork), had to sue his father for access to the family's billions. Lightly creased. ½-inch tear at lower right blank margin. Staple holes and 2 file holes at upper blank margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
