He had translated the tragedies of Sophocles into verse and composed several collections of poems, including a Vendée chronicle in verse, Béatrix des Fontenelles.After starting his studies in Poitiers, Émile Faguet continued them at the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris and entered the École normale supérieure in 1867. He was appointed professor in Poitiers, then taught successively in La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Moulins. Having become an associate professor of letters in 1874, he taught rhetoric in Clermont-Ferrand, received the degree of doctor in letters in 1883 and returned to the Lycée Charlemagne. From there, he went to Lycée Condorcet then to Janson-de-Sailly where he practiced until 1896.Chosen as deputy to the faculty of letters of the Sorbonne in 1890, to the chair of French poetry, he became the holder in 1897 and, on February 15, 1900, he was elected member of the French Academy in the 3rd chair, until then attributed to the novelist Victor Cherbuliez.He is buried in the Montparnasse cemeteryLiterary careerFriend of Francisque Sarcey, he frequents the influential salon of the famous "lady with violets", Mme de Loynes, where he joined forces with the critic Jules Lemaître, to whom he succeeded, in 1896, the Journal des debates. He then contributed to numerous newspapers and periodicals including Cosmopolis (1896-1898), Le Gaulois, Le Matin, Le Soleil, la Revue des deux Mondes where he gave a series of portraits of Mme de Staël, Louis de Bonald, Joseph de Maistre , the Revue bleue, and the Revue Latine, which he wrote almost entirely, the Revue de Paris, the Revue encyclopédique, the Revue des cours littéraires, the Revue du palais, Comœdia, Conférencia, where he dealt with the drama series, the history , literature or philosophy. In 1910, he became an employee of Touche à tout.He wrote a considerable number of works which have trained entire generations of students. Very scholar, writer full of verve, at free pace, he was by turns brilliant chronicler and subtle critic, was especially interested in ideas and his work Politiques et moralistes du XIXe siècle revealed him as a fine psychologist.He published on literature: Études littéraires sur les XVIe, XVIIe, XVIIIe et XIXe centuries, History of French literature, History of French poetry (from the Renaissance to Romanticism), Notes on contemporary theater, and wrote numerous studies of criticism of Corneille, La Fontaine, André Chénier, Voltaire, Gustave Flaubert, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Nietzsche.
