Yom Kippur Shofar Crafts for Kids
Help your child to better understand the significance of Yom Kippur with a crafty creation. Your artsy kiddo can sculpt, draw and use their imagination as they celebrate one of the most important days of the Jewish calendar.
Paper Mache Shofar
Create a lifelike version of the holiday shofar (ram’s horn) with paper mache. Crumple and tape newspaper to create the shofar (horn) shape. Cover the entire form in masking or duct tape. Cover the newspaper shofar with paper mache. Mix a pre-packaged paste or create your own by mixing flour, clear school glue and water. Tear construction paper into strips, dip it into the paste and coat the horn. Leave the large end up. After the paper mache dries gently remove or cut the tape-covered newspaper out.
Make a mini 2D mosaic, using a simple drawing and collage technique. Have your child draw the shofar’s shape onto card stock paper or poster board. Tear pieces of tissue paper. Glue the paper, collage style onto the shofar.
Water Color and Wax Shofar
Start with a simple shofar drawing on construction or water color paper. Have your child draw a design or write a holiday message with a white or light-colored crayon. Paint cover the area with water colors. Watch as they magically reveal the crayon drawing.
