Best 1st Class Relic Available of The True Cross with Document and Superb Grand Altar Reliquary. Wood from the crucified Christ's cross and those of the other passions are all 1st class.

Relic is contained in a plain silver oval theca with very nice nun's work to the interior. Theca is housed in this grand altar reliquary standing over 14" tall. Reliquary has jewels, sunburst and mint gold plate.

Document is Paulus Marusci, Archiepisdcopus Calcidensis Armenus, Rome.

Note: The metal backing on the theca I cannot remove to take a picture of the seal and threads without damaging the theca. It is tightly sealed probably because its so old that it has oxidized the back cover to the front cover. I cannot guarantee that the threads or seal are intact.

In the past few years, the Vatican only authenticates the relics of saints who lived and died after the 8th century. The relics of saints from the early centuries of the church are no longer available from Rome. As a result, relics of the early saints and martyrs are difficult to obtain. This relic is a treasure to be honored, and a rare one to find. Given the abuses that occurred with relics during the Middle Ages, the Council of Trent (in the 1500s) decreed that all relics must be accompanied by a document. Only with the document can a relic be used for public veneration. For private veneration, document is not necessary.

However, if you are planning on gifting your relic at some time to your church or priest for public veneration, document is necessary.

Note that the relic is the small dark area in the round or oval theca. The name of the saint is written above or below this area. Most relic particles are pinhead in size and covered with a resin or glue of some sort. Because the particle is so small, and that particle is covered with glue or resin, it is nearly impossible to see with the naked eye what the relic is without looking under a magnifying glass. Furthermore, you are looking at digital pictures that are not the best quality. Most particles look dark, some are light, but most everyone knows this information who are familiar with relics. Only the reliquary is for sale, the relic itself is a gift included. However,some are not informed or misinformed about relics, and hopefully this information will help those who are unfamiliar with the actual relic itself.
