Alpsco African Tribal Motif Chess Set
1960s ⨋
Up for sale is a Vintage Alpsco (brand name) African tribal motif chess set ⨋. It was bought sometime in the 1960s. Made of a molded material, probably plastic made to appear similar to ivory, it features thirty-two chess pieces, sixteen of each color. The chess board is not included.
The pawns are easily recognizable by their diminutive size and great number. They stand about 2¼” (5.7 cm) tall. Some of the other pieces are not as easy to tell. The knights can be told by the stirrups on the sides. They also look somewhat phallic. I guess the bishops are the ones with the tall, curving pharaoh hats/hair dresses. They and the pawns have two faces, one looking forward, the other back. The rooks are the tallest pieces, resembling a totem pole. They are about 4½” (11.4 cm) tall. Finally, the king resembles a phallus (sorry) and is probably the largest piece on the board, while the queen is obvious by her breastwork. (Africans were so much less squirmish about this kind of thing than we are.)
One would have to be extremely picky to say this set is not in excellent condition.

I usually send out items within a day of receiving payment but several things could slow me down. Usually that comes down to an apparently bad address. Being a verified buyer and having a confirmed address can help.
PayPal is usually the fastest and easiest way to pay but if you don’t want to use PayPal, I don’t want you to use PayPal. Contact me about alternative payment methods before offerding.
