During a career of more than six decades, Mr. Balterman photographed superstar athletes Muhammad Ali, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams; a young Wellesley-era Hillary Rodham; President Nixon; Yippie Abbie Hoffman; and Isaac Hayes in his “Hot Buttered Soul” heyday.
His assignments for Life, Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines included the Our Lady of the Angels fire in 1958 and the 1968 Democratic National Convention, along with the Apollo 11 and 12 launchings. Then there were his self-assigned pursuits: the neighborhood festivals, the bars of Rush and Clark Streets, the night people, the everyman, the lovers, the children — all his kind of people.
Mr. Balterman shot in color for his commercial work for Time-Life, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. He made the cover of Life with his photo of 1968 Democratic presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey and running mate Ed Muskie. He did a compelling Life pictorial on the mother of the last soldier who was killed in Vietnam.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Balterman graduated from high school in 1938, and later took evening classes in drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1942, during World War II, Balterman enlisted in the US Army Reserves. First stationed in England, he then served in Clichy, France, working as a hospital aide and later as an army photographer. After being discharged in 1946, Balterman returned to Chicago and began working as a freelance photographer for the Globe, Rapho-Guillumette, and Black Star agencies, as well as producing covers for periodicals such as Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. He was noted in particular as a photograph of ballet.
He died in 2012, aged 91.
