7 Foot Tall Folk-art Blue Millenial Donkey 2000 Election Gore, Lieberman Daley For Sale
A real piece of Americana Folk-Art seeking a new and loving home!
I'll bet you don't have one of these yet. This is a huge folk-art papier-mache Gore/Lieberman/Daley Democratic Donkey which was originally shown at and sold to benefit Gallery 37 in Chicago in the year 2000. Gallery 37 is a gallery that raises money for art students in the Chicago Public Schools. Commemorating the Year 2000 Democratic ticket of Al Gore and Joseph Lieberman. To all Democrats forever forward this will be the 'one that got away', when Al Gore won the popular vote but George Bush won the electoral college on the back of hanging chads in the state of Florida, Jeb Bush's territory, and American history took a veer to the right.
Huge means huge - approximately 7 feet long and 7 feet tall to the tip of his erect ear. Because he is papier-mache, he is an easy two-man lift and will fit through a standard door. There are various political paper badges featured on the brim of the donkey's straw hat commemorating the Gore-Lieberman ticket for 2000 as well as Mayor Richard Daley. A few scuffs, one notable on the right ear ( pictured ) but overall excellent condition, solid, and certainly ready for another few dozen presidential races. This big Dem Donkey is clearly a tribute to the hugely successful 'Cows On Parade' street exhibit in 1999 in Chicago. This political piece of democratic/presidential/chicago history would be a crowning addition to any political collection - a real attention-grabber.
Email me with questions about shipping, we'll figure it out! I will not be able to deliver or ship this item until the first week of February - if that's not acceptable, please refrain from offerding this time around......
The Donkey is too large and fragile to ship by traditional means - it can be picked up by the buyer in Michigan City, Indiana, or delivered for a fee in the Chicago area+/- 200 miles.
More on Gallery 37 from Wikipedia;
Gallery 37is a job training program and was created in 1991 byChicago'sDepartment of Cultural Affairs'Lois Weisbergand Maggie Daley, wife of the city's former mayor,Richard M. Daley. Its purpose is to attract artistically inclined city youth to work as apprentice artists at a vacant downtown lot known asBlock 37, bound by State, Dearborn, Washington, and Randolph streets. Nevertheless, Gallery 37 maintained satellite sites at Grant Park, and many ofChicago's public high schools. Gallery 37 is currently run byAfter School Matters, a not-for-profit organization that partners with the City of Chicago, the Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Public Library, the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and Community-Based Organizations to expand out-of-school opportunities for Chicago teens.
The program was open to young people between the ages of 14 to 21 living within the city limits. Gallery 37 initially was a summer program, but later expanded its operations during the fall and spring at hours that allowed apprentices to continue attending school during the day. More importantly, Gallery 37 offered young people the opportunity to work with professional artists, such asGladys Nilsson
