Notes: This brass lamp has Beautiful stippling withraised lettering “TOUL FRANCE 1918”. The word “VICTORY” is engraved near thebase in block lettering.

Historical Significance: Toulon, town and port,capital of Var région,southEastern France. Itis France’s principal navalbase and has an arsenal, the most important of the Mediterranean drydocks,and shipbuilding yards. Toulon’s naval arsenal was founded by Henry IV(reigned 1589–1610), but the Romans originally had a naval signal station onthe shores of the gulf. The French statesmen Cardinalde Richelieu and Jean-BaptisteColbert and the engineer SébastienLe Prestre de Vauban all strengthened the forts. It resisted a siege byAllied forces (1707) during the War ofthe Spanish Succession and was the scene of a famous battle of the FrenchRevolutionary Wars (seeToulon, Siege of).After 1815 Toulon increased in importance and was the port of embarkation formost of the French military expeditions of the 19th century. By the 20th century it was themost powerful naval base of France and was the center for the Allied navalforces in the Mediterranean in World War I.
