This Rushlight Splint Holder example is in great original condition.

Lighting holders such as these were used specifically to house burning splints, soaked in sap or grease. Said splint would have been held within the jaws of the center mechanism. The user had the ability to \'load\' the piece by pulling back on the spring like mechanism incorporated by the blacksmith to keep slight pressure on the splint. Bound rush reeds were often placed in the jaws of this lighting device as well, with wax and tallow candles later being used in place.

Note the great signs of original blacksmith made construction with a triangle shaped base, three footed construction and even a top hanging loop that would have allowed it to be carried or hung of the back of a chair etc.

The piece stands approximately 9 \" tall with a gate between the legs of 5 3/4\".

There is a great twist design on the center, just below an area that was formed with a dosing cup to extinguish the tip of a burning splint. Has the remains of some grease from time, some pitting to the surface as one would expect from age, overall though very good condition.
