ITEM BEING OFFERED: NICE CASE. LIGHT EDGE WEAR

ONE OF THE 10 I HAVE AVAIL THIS WEEK..

I AM NOT SURE OF THE MATERIAL . IT LOOKS TO BE A THINK LEATHER OVER A WOOD OR MOLDED PULP ... I\'M SURE COLLECTORS WILL KNOW WITH THIS CLUE

FEELS LIKE WOOD BASE OR LIKE .. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE THIN LEATHER TYPE AS THERE IS LIGHT WEAR .. BUT NOT SURE . THESE ARE A NEW AREA FOR ME AND I AM NOT VERSED IN THESE BUT DID BUY THE COLLECTION AT THE ESTATE WHICH ARE ALL BEING LISTED NOW.. THEY ARE SOME OF THE NICEST I HAVE EVER HAD AS FAR AS CONDITION

. THERE IS ONLY SOME WEAR ON THE EDGES BUT THE FACE IN THE FRONT AND BACK ARE IN NICE CONDITION AS FAR AS THE HIGHER RELIEF AREAS.. . THE SPINE IS STILL CONNECTED WELL BUT THERE IS A PIN HOLE IN THE CENTER THAT LIGHT GOES THROUGH WHEN OPENED. YOU CAN SEE A DOT OF LIGHT..

AND THE HOOK HINGE ON THE SIDE ARE WELL SECURE

THE PHOTO ( TYPE UNKNOWN.. ANYTHING FROM TINTYPE TO A DAG.. HARD TO TELL AND I DONT WANT TO REMOVE FROM CASE AS I AM SURE COLLECTORS WILL APPRECIATE .. THE PHOTO IS A PORTRAIT OF WOMEN / WOMAN AND AND SHE IS HOLDING HER HANDS WITH THUMBS IN THE POSITION OF A TRIANGLE ..

SHE APPREARS TO BE WEALTHY AND HAS DANGLE EARRINGS AND A BROOCH THAT THE PHOTOGRAPHER ( LOOKING WITH LOOP ) HAS TINTED OR ADDED GOLD TONE DETAIL ( PAINTED TO THE EARRINGS AND BROOCH )

I AM NOT SURE OF THE PHOTO PROCESS... I AM GOING TO TAKE A GUESS AND SAY \'\'POSSIBLY\'\' A DAG I REALLY AM NOT VERY GOOD AT THIS WHEN THEY ARE IN THE CASES.. THERE IS A ... AS THERE IS A BLUEISH RAINBOW LIKE CIRCLE HALO AROUND THE EDGES BUT DOESNT SHOW ON THE IMAGE.. SO POSSIBLY A SILVER PROCESS AS ITS ONLY ON THE EDGES AROUNG THE INNER GOLDEN AREA. .. BUT NOT NEAR THE FACE AND BODY THIS DOES NOT SHOW. IF TIPPED A TAD A CERTAIN WAY YOU CAN SEE A NEGITIVE LIKE IMAGE PLATE ?

THE RED VELVET.. NOT SILK IS IN GREAT ! CONDITION.. AND IS BRIGHT AND DEEPER RED... AND ONLY SLIGHTLY FADED ON THE UPPER AREA NOT BAD REALLY COMPAIRED MANY I HAVE SEEN..

AND IS EMBOSSED OR CRUSHED WITH FLOWER IN A COMPOTE OR POSSIBLY FRUIT

THE GOLD BORDER IS GOLD TONE OR BETTER EMBOSSED WITH DETAIL UNDERNEATH THE GLASS AND ALSO HAS EMBOSSED BORDER SURROUNDING THE PHOPTOGRAPH IN AN RECTANGLE AREA AROUND THE PICTURE .. THE PICTURE LOOKS TO BE APROX 2.25 x 2\" INCHES

PLEASE NOTE THAT SOME OF THE \'FIBERS \' THAT SHOW ON THE PHOTO ARE ON TOP OF THE GLASS NOT ON THE ACTUAL PHOTO ITSELF.. I DID NOT WANT TO USE ANY CLEANER ON THE GLASS AND TOOK PHOTOS IN AS FOUND CONDITION ON ALL I HAVE RUNNING. MANY OF THE LITTLE DOTS SHOWN BRUSHED OFF WHEN LISTING THIS PIECE WITH FINGERTIP

FEATURES: ESTATE INFORMATION BELOW AND I DO BELIEVE THIS IS FROM THE CENTRAL NEW YORK CHADWICK SIDE OF THE FAMILY ( FEMALE SIDE ) ..

Thermoplastic Vs Union Cases
DAGUERREOTYPES Aprox 1839-1860,
Daguerreotypes; Reflective surface, hologram reflective or mirror like. Viewed from one angle, a dag appears shiny-light. From the other angle it\'s negative with matte finish. Early non-film--paper photos, Dag image was set on polished silver non-emulsion method giving mirror you may see your own reflection. Which is not with other type of photos, Making it a bit hard to see image without Tipping at angleOldest Daguerreotypes were silver clad onto copper, later electroplated onto copper. Silver tarnishes so Dags were cased behind glass & sealed keeping air-moisture out. Daguerreotype, are enclosed in a hinged case, Never try remove it from case as it can cause damage. Dags the early ones have gray-Blue color, in later yrs were more light brown/Tan tone w/some blue on areas of tarnish. most often these case photo types, tarnish is on edges of metal photo.
Daguerreotypes standard sizes:Whole Plate:6.5\" x 8.5\" or6&1/2\" x 8&1/2\"Half-Plate:4.25\" x 5.5\" or4&1/4\" x 5&1/2\"Quarter-Plate:3.25\" x 4.25\" or3&1/4\" x 4&1/4Sixth-Plate:2.75\" x 3.25\" or 2&3/4\" x 3&1/4\"Ninth-Plate:2\" x 2.5\" or2\" x 2&1/2\"Sixteenth-Plate :1&3/8\" x 1&5/8\"Double Whole:10.5\" x 13.5\" or10&1/2\" x 13&1/2\"
AMBROTYPES~ AmphitypesPopular in America-Europe 1853 ~ 1870 to 1890sAs In Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes often reversed white-grayish Low contrastShiny but No Hologram~ No mirror Reflective EffectMounted with hinged cases as image on emulsion-coated glass w/background behind like black paint/varnish on back of glass & japanned cardboard which is black baked lacquer black velvet/varnished metal mount behind the glass. Ambros a bit darker even if tinted. If not in a case, you can tell the difference between Tintypes & Dags because on glass & transparent.Ambrotypes can get damage through years, Paint/varnish can crack-peel, giving a blistered look. Emulsion can also get a bit darker loosing contrast detailAmbros wont tarnish the dont get blue tones bluish like Dags that have tarnish. If the back is damaged or scratched these can be restored as they are on glass w/backcoats .
TINTYPES 1853 -1890s.Grey/Gray Whitish Lower Contrast & do not reflect like a mirror or hologramEarly tintypes can be found with cases.Sometimes top of photo have crazing-Craze or cracks not found w/Ambros
Tintypes are close to Ambrotypes. But tintypes are silver halide emulsion coated on plates of tin or iron & not glass & have black paint-varnish.tintypes usually reversed except if prisms/mirrors were used in cameraCased, tintypes can look like ambrotypes they may be hard to tellMost were little & aprox size of paper photo Like CV or \"carte de visite,\" a little larger than a Modern business cards.Tintypes avg sizes.Smalls or Gemtypes : 1\"x1-3/8\" to 1\"x1/2\" & Big 6.5\" x 8.5\"Made of iron, a magnet used can help tell this from tintypeThough method isnt perfect. A few ambros may be backed w/metal

Telling the difference between Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes is a little tough for me when in the cases tough, i hope that collectors will be able to determine from my clues in description
Case Material & DesignHinged Antique Victorian Cases, Often embossed with leather, lined w/silk-velvet facing the picture to help pad/Protect GlassAround 1852, Resin-based thermoplastic case were being made, called a Union case, was used. Cases can be just as collectible as the images they contain.
Gutta-Percha is made from Palaquium treeThey actually may be Thermoplastic Union Cases or molded leather Gutta-percha\'s more a generic term some sellers/Buyers use for searching as many are not aware of this info or people that think they look like Gutta-Percha that mourning beads & jewelry was sometimes made fromThermoplastic Union Cases is the real term, UNION CASE ;Many people believe, the name has nothing to do with the American Civil War or the battle between Union & Confederate States. Though they are from this era at times & may have been carried by Soldiers to war.1854 Samuel Peck daguerreotypist in the USA invented the process of plastic cases or \'Thermoplastic\' The Term \"Union\" is due to materials construction or \'Union\" of the composition material making the cases, These materials consisted of sometimes shellac, sawdust, chemicals dyes for coloring black-brown. in most cases When compiled they were heated & pressed molds, Union Cases formed because of the way they were made, many having ornate details Gold or Gold tones embossed frames around photo area (bottom 1/2) and again lined with red or silk material on the top 1/2 This composition or Thermoplastic, is example of the earliest forms of plastic. Before Thermoplastic Union Cases Daguerreotype & Ambrotype cases were usually made of wood covered in thin leather.Thermoplastic Union Cases are extremely collectible especially when in great condition, but often fragile could warp (usually from heat), Broke or cracked when not handled careful, discolored from water or sun cracking around hinge or clasp
On thermoplastic cases you want to apply slight pressure to bottom half in middle near the clasp w/thumb & gently lift top half w/other hand.Thermoplastic Union Cases, are sometimes worth more than photo inside, thermo are not avail or plentiful as leather & wood Union Cases, But most Thermoplastic Union cases are common as far as items of any kind found from this time period of 1850\'s. Rarity Thermoplastic Union cases goes by shape, design, condition size.Half Plate & Full Plate Union Cases being rare & highest in price,Standard size cases will command a higher price if they are in Very Nice condition with no chips, cracks Ect, If perfect, can be more important than image inside unless image is occupational, ethnic, outdoor interesting image. Daguerreotypes are usually higher than Ambrotype Tintype and pricing of an image in a Union Case usually follows the same value scale. Leather Union Cases can have very beautiful designs, but leather union cases are subject to spine split from age-opening-closing ect. Sometimes Red Rot can set in where the leather is disintegrating. If a Union Case has broken spine, the 2 halves of case can become separated But if you have both top and bottom & they are a match in design, This is a PLUS as there are thin leather spine repair kits avail online to repair Please handle with care on repair, as the repair may not lower the value of unique & or high value PROVENANCE:
