The History of Barbie

Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by theAmerican toy company Mattel, Inc. Barbie was launched in March 1959 by Mattelafter American businesswoman Ruth Handler created the doll by using a Germandoll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. Ruth had watched her daughterBarbara play with paper dolls & noticed that she often enjoyed giving thedolls adult roles. At the time, most children\'s dolls were baby doll infants.Realizing that there could be a gap in the market, Ruth suggested the idea ofan adult- bodied doll to her husband Elliot, co-founder of the Mattel toycompany. Elliot was unenthusiastic about the idea, as were Mattel\'s directors.During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara & Kenneth, Ruthcame across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. the adult-figured doll wasexactly what Ruth had in mind, she purchased three of them & brought them backto America. Ruth then gave one to her daughter & took the other two &presented them to Mattel. The Lilli doll was based on a popular characterappearing in a comic strip drawn by Reinhard Beuthin for the newspaper DieBild-Zeitung. Lilli was a blonde bombshell, a working girl who knew what shewanted & was not above using men to get it. The Lilli doll was first soldin Germany in 1955 & although it was initially sold to adults, it alsobecame popular with children who enjoyed dressing her up in outfits that weresold separately. Upon Ruth’s return to America, Ruth reworked the design of thedoll & the doll was given the new name Barbie, after Ruth\'s daughter.Barbie made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York onMarch 9, 1959. This date also became Barbie\'s official Birthday!
