Beautiful L Black Wounaan Basket With Colorful Butterflies:
I am downsizing my collection of Wounaan andEmberá baskets purchased from theDarién Rainforest of Panamá. Thesefine hand-woven baskets by the Wounaan Indians are created using silk-fine strands of the black palmAstrocaryum standleyanum, called chunga and colored with vegetal and organic dyes, they are sewn over coils ofCarludovica palmate, called naguala . This black palm protects itself with vicious spines up to six inches long. Only the young, tender emerging leaves at the top of the spiny-trunked chunga are used to create these finely crafted baskets. Although reportedlythey are so tightly woven that they will hold water, it is not recommended!Wounaan Indian women have clearly emerged as the most masterful basket weavers in Panamá.
This particular basket pictures many brilliant colorful butterflies on a black background. It stands 6.25 inches tall, 6.25 inches wide and is 21 inches incircumference. A butterfly also adorns the bottom of the basket which can be seen both inside and outside. The artisan is a Wounaan woman, Luviana Puchicama, from the DorianRainforest.
