Detailed Buddha’s Enlightenment Antique Siam Bronze Prayer Back Temple Medal :
Those interested in this area of medal collecting should first consult a book called Well-Known Medals and Coins of the Lord Buddha, by Boonserm Sriphiromya. We guarantee the medals provenance, age and authenticity as described below.
This antique medal was acquired by my mother, a Catholic missionary nurse living in Siam during the 1940’s. Some were acquired when visiting Buddhist temples near the hospital where she worked. We have posted a picture of Bertha above; the founder of Church-Woman Antiques.
Mom was astounded by the similarities to Christian Scripture, represented by each different Icon of the Buddha on her medals. There are 66 different Buddha Icons represented on her medals, and each symbolize different Buddha teachings.
Bertha found that those Buddha teachings bear a striking resemblance to the New Testament teachings of Jesus; for this reason she amassed a collection of them during her stay in Siam until the end of WWII when she left. These medals are from her private collection, and we waited 2 years after Bertha's passing to sale them on behalf of two Catholic CarmeliteConvents that she wanted to help out with their sale; they feed poor kids in South America.
Bronze 1.15 inch; weight 7 grams.
The image is seated cross-legged with both hands, palm up, on the lap. The left hand cups the right one.
The Budhisattva meditated and obtained enlightenment under the Boshi tree on the back of the Neranjara River at the district of Uruvela in the region of Magadha.
Good luck offerding!
