Gale's Astronomical Perpetual Calendar Clock Mechanism For Sale
Gale's Patent astronomical calendar clock perpetual mechanism. This rare piece was used with 26-inch dial clock, having outer date chapter enclosing subsidiary dials with astronomical indications for age of the moon, day of week, time, sixteen-year leap year cycle, week-of-the-year and month indicator with annual perpetual calendar calculation chapter. This mechanism is untouched as found original dirt and tarnish and does not appear to have been used. Based on comparison with other movements particularly the actuating arm this is either a very early example or most probably a prototype model. Compare photos with the pictures of an example that was saleed for $19,000.
The only other example we have discovered was at Sotheby's, "Masterpieces of the Time Museum," New York, October 14 & 15, 2004, lot 1135. The well-researched catalog states that Gales' 1869 patent was sold to E N Welch in 1870, who manufactured the clock. One interesting difference is that the Time Museum clock was signed on the mvt, but we noticed no signature on this example; it may be further concealed. Unfortunately we have no further photos of any Welch manufactured Gale's Patent mvts to determine if there are other differences. We do not know if Gale manufactured a prototype or prior examples, or if this might be one. Those experts with access to images or examples of such mvts might be able to advise us.
