After serving in World War II, Shimaoka Tatsuzo 1919- 2007 apprenticed under world famous Mashiko Mingei potter Hamada Shoji,establishing his own kiln in 1954. Working with rope patterns, Tatsuzo set out to create a style unique to himself, resulting in the piece you see here,which is quintessential Tatsuzo. In 1996 he was designated a Living National Treasure.
