For sale is a Northwest Coast native hand madepainted and carved cedar Sun Mask. As in all cultures, the sun stands as a symbol of life and creative power. In Northwest Coast art, the sun features prominently in myths and this one is painted in the traditional colors of red, black, and green. Ithas ahuman facewith pierced eyes, nose, and mouth with eightrays painted black surrounded by a red border.It is signed 'Emil Thibert Sun 96'. Emil is a renouned Northwest Coast Metis artist of Saulteax/Cree/French heritage who grew up in Alberta & now resides in Calgary, AB. He studied the Kwakiutl style carving from Carl Simeon of Campbell River BC. Emil places heavy emphasis on the study of old pieces in all styles of Northwest Coast carving. Emill sees his carvings as a way of ensuring that those traditions are preserved for future generations. Emil Thibert`s works are collected worldwide and can be found in some of the finest Native Art Galleries in North America. The mask measures 15" X 12" and the face is 9" X 5 1/2" and it is 6" deep. It is a very striking mask and presents well. It is in very good condition with slight imperfections and a very minor split in the cedar at the top of the head which can be seen in the photo.
