Parrot Feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum)

If you have goldfish or Koi in your pond or watergarden, think carefully before buying aquatic plants taken from the wild. These plants will carry parasites and disease that may affect your fish. Our plants are grown on site in above ground pools.

Parrot feather(Myriophyllum aquaticum) is a native of South Americaand has whorls of feathery blue-green to waxy gray-green leaves deeply cut intomany narrow lobes. It has an interestinggrowth habit as it extends above the water surface. As the water warms in the spring, parrotfeather begins to flourish.

It is sometimes sold for aquarium use and is a popularplant for aquatic gardens where it can be contained. People can easily identify parrot feather as itlooks like tiny green fir trees, extending up to one foot over the watersurface. The plant spreads readilythrough fragmentation of the stems and rhizomes. It is an excellent plant for your watergarden if you are in an un-restricted state.

Parrot Featheris wonderful at feeding on the nutrients in water that would otherwise producealgae bloom, and also gives a softening effect to the edges of your water featureand waterfall. Fish can spawn in it andit gives a hiding place for the fry. Parrot feather is a lovely plant aesthetically,and useful for many purposes.
