RARE J.C.BROWN, BRISTOL, CONN. OGEE SHELF CLOCK

This clock has a beautiful mahogany case with original polychrome-painted tin dial, Roman numerals, flowered spandrels. The case is in excellent condition.

This clock has the original label of Brown\'s Forestville Mfg. Co.,with signed 30-hour time and strike, weight-driven, brass works.

This clock has been in my husband\'s family for over 100 years. It runs good, is keeping time, and chimes on the hour. It is26\" high x 15.5\" wide x 4.25\" deep with black and white etching(?) of a young couple with 2 rabbits in a park-like settingon the panel below the face.

An \"ogee clock\" is a common kind of weight-driven 19th-centurypendulum clockin a simplified Gothic taste, made in the United States for a mantelpiece or to sit upon a wall bracket. It is rectangular, with ogee-profile molding that frames a central glass door that protects the clock face and the pendulum. The door usually carries a painted scene in the area beneath the face. Ogee clocks are one of the most commonly encountered varieties of American antique clocks.

J.C. Brown (Johnathan Clark Brown, Jr.) was born in 1807, and died in 1872. He had various business partners from 1832 until 1842 when he bought out Wm. Hills, and formed J.C. Brown & Co. He used both his own name and Forestville Mfg. Co. on the labels.

From 1847-1855 he conducted business without partners as the Forestville Manufacturing Company or the Forestville Clock Manufactory. Brown’s business failed in 1855, and he was bought out byE.N Welch. The J.C. Brown factory became part of the E.N. Welch clock manufacturing complex.
