Celluloid is easily molded and shaped, and it was first widely used as an ivory replacement. By the 1920\'s, it was widely replaced in jewelry making by the much more stable Bakelite, Galaith and Catalin plastics. Why? . . . Celluloid was highly flameable! Developed in the 1930s, the clear acrylic plastic branded as Lucite became a wildly popular material for costume jewelry starting in the 1950s as it was less expensive to produce than Bakelite, Galalith, and Catalin--it made these earlier jewelry plastics obsolete. Here is a vintage circa 1920\'s - 1940\'s collectible EARLY CELLULOID PLASTIC GOOGLE EYE DOG PIN BROOCH. This cute dimensional cartoon doggy brooch is off-white celluloid plastic with hand-painted coloring in greens, blue, black, orange, brown and black. He is wearing a green polka dot hat that looks like a fez and is holding what looks to me like a big mallet. I imagine he\'s about to play that carnival game where you try make the thing go up and ring the bell. LOL He has the original google eye still in place and still working (these are often yellowed--but this one is still clear). VERY RARE & SUPER DUPER CUTE! He measures approximately 1 3/4\" x 1 1/4\" and weighs 0.2 oz. He is unsigned and has a glued on pin and locking rollover C clasp in perfect working condition (I suspect he originally had an open C clasp but it has been replaced?). As you can see, there is some wear to the paint (see all photos) but for his age he is definitely in EXCELLENT vintage condition--no chips or scratches and the google eye is original and still works! This little doggy guy is adorable, RARE, and highly collectible--and would be a fantastic addition to a vintage plastic or any vintage jewelry collection!
