Douglas DC-4, United Airlines, 2 FatalitiesThese four vintage photographs (one print has been duplicated) document the crash of a Douglas DC-4, the Mainliner Lake Michigan, near Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1946.
Aviation records say that there were two fatalities on this flight from San Fransisco to Cheyenne.
The Aviation Safety Network records state:
"At least two attempts to land had failed as the aircraft approached too high in minimum ceiling conditions.
The pilot tried to maneuver the aircraft to another runway at a low altitude.
The wing struck the ground and the DC-4 skidded for 700 feet. The aircraft was named "Mainliner Lake Michigan".
The four photos measure approx. 3 3/4" by 3 3/4" and are bordered.
On the back of one is written, "Plane down at 40A north of Airport below dam".
