The Yangliuqing nianhua (woodblock prints for Chinese New Year) originated in late Ming Dynasty and reached its prime during the reigns of Qianlong and Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty. Being both decorative and expressive of hope for good fortunes, the Yangliuqing nianhua was not only sold well around Beijing and Tianjin but also enjoyed a great demand from northern parts of the country such as the Northeast, Shanxi, Inner Mogolia and Xinjiang. There was one time in the town of Yangliuqing, then production centre for nianhua, when "every family knew about colouring and each household excelled at painting".
