Up for sale is an amazing piece of history. This is an exceptionally scarce copy of \"Poems of German wrath against England.\" It is made even more special by the lengthy two page inscription from a 1st Lieutenant in the 11th field Artillery Unit writing at the close of WWI from the front lines in France. The inscription written to a friend is dated November 24th, 1918, just days after the end of WWI. Sent from Cervisy France, the letter, (which is copied in full below), identifies this book as being acquired by the soldier from the library of General Von Gallwik, Commander of the 5th German Army. The area the soldier was in is at the heart of the WWI battlefields, the inscription is written by a member of the Field Unit that fired the last shot of WWI, in a book that is exceptionally rare and no other copies can be found anywhere on line. This is a true piece of history. Full letter transcribed below following the book and condition description.
Overall this small softcover book is in fair+ condition. Book contains 87 numbered pages plus several advertisements at end. Each poem is written both in German and English. Published 1915 Lepisic. A scarce work with no copies available on line. Browning and wear to the book. Staining at top of front board, to rear boards and in other places. Small rips in places. Some creasing to the soft boards and in other places. Other small dings here and there. Given this book\'s history it is amazing it is in the condition it is. Please email with any questions. What follows is the transcription of the lengthy inscription written onto the first and second pages of the book (First leaf front and back)
\"To my friend and former comrade Dr. A.B. Van Ormer (*there is then something that looks like No 97 written in another hand and what I would guess is a German catalog number)
This book was taken by me from among other books, situated in what was up until several days ago the Headquarters of General Von Gallwik, Commander of the 5th German Army, in the town of Montmedy on the extreme northern front of the American sector. The book appealed to me as being not only a valuable souvenir, but it meidentally (*sp) gives an insight into the clever way that Prussia militarism has pushed itspropagandaeven into the minds of its own people. UndoubtedlyPrussia was preparing her people for years, putting them in the proper frame of mindpsychologicallyas it were, and as you dear friend of my boyhood, are I know a keen psychologist, I feel that this little book might be of some interest to you. Pray accept it, not as something of value, but just as a little souvenir from thedevastatedportions of France (over) and as a symbol that the boy whom you started so well years ago, and \'who has now\' grown to manhood and has been trying to do his little bit \"over here\", has not forgotten you dear oldfriend, although his silence might indicate such to be the case. I can only plead that have been awfully busy chasing Heinie for some months past and as a consequence have had little time other than to advise our loved ones of our safety and good health. My very best love to Mrs. Van Ormer and Edwardcordially yoursH Humphries 1st Lieut. 11th F.A.Am. E.7Cervisy, FranceNov 24th, 1918.
Note also the same name and title are written at top left of the front cover. I have not been able to positively identify the soldier who wrote this. WWI genealogical research is a bit out of my area of expertise.
