Protected Cruiser in 1/1200 scale

This is a model of the ProtectedCruiser of the Tsarist Navy, the Russian Navy SVETLANA. The SVETLANA was constructedas a Royal Yacht for Alexandrovich Romanov, the brother of Tsar Nicholas andCinC of the Imperial Navy. The SVETLANAwas laid down in 1895 at LeHavre, France on a design based on the French FRIANTclass, and commissioned in 1899. SVETLANA had slightly less armor than herFrench cousins, but made up for it with her luxurious accommodations for theImperial family. SVETLANA made severalcruises “showing the Flag”, to Lisbon, Kiel, Copenhagen, and several ports inthe Baltic Sea.

At the Start of the Russo-Japanese War, SVETLANA was attached tothe 2nd Russian Pacific Squadron as Flagship. Duringthe Battle of Tsushima, she fell back to protect the support vessels, but wasdamaged. SVETLANA attempted to join OLEGand AURORA in their flight to Manila, but as she was to slow, attempted a runfor Vladivostok with the Destroyer BYSTRY.Overtaken by the Japanese cruisers NIITAKA and OTOWA, she was sunk aftera gun battle off the Korean Coast. Hersurvivors were rescued by the Japanese Auxiliary ship AMERICA MARU.

SVETLANA was 331 feet long, 54 feet wide and of 3,862 tons displacement,and was capable of speeds up to 21 knots. She carried six 6” guns, ten47mm guns and two torpedo tubes. She had a complement of 401 men.

The internationally renowned Mastermodeler John Youngerman is the maker of this model. Each model isindividually built of wood and other material in 1/1200 Recognition Scale,where each inch represents one hundred feet of the real ship. This modelis about 3 1/3” inches long. No two ships are identical. These arenot used or secondhand, but were shipped directly from the maker in Elk Grove,California. John Youngerman also makes master models for several overseasmetal ship casting firms.

The model is new and in excellentcondition. Some pertinent information is on a sticker on the bottom, aswell as John’s maker’s signature. The ship is hand painted and detailedby John as well.
