100th Bomb Group 418th Bomb Squadron Painted A-2 Jacket Artwork 8th Aaf:
An exceptional 100th Bomb Group AAF A2!
An all original and overall excellent condition WWII leather A2 flight jacket with good solid supple leather, original workingTalonzipper, and good clean period cuffs and waistband.
The front depicts the squadron emblem of the 418th Bomb Squadron of the 8th AAF and the man's Bombardier wings, the name tape has been removed. Also depicted on the front are 31 bombs representing the missions flown by this veteran. The left shoulder still retains the ARMY AIR FORCES decal.
The reverse of the jacket is incredible! It depicts an artfully executed reclining lady over "100" with bomb & checkerboard pattern. The name Thopre Abbotsis written below for the Air Base in England that the "bloody Hundredth" 100th Bomb Group flew out of! Above is the B-17's name "Impatient Virgin" and above that are bombs for each mission this airman earned a decoration! At the top are threeGerman symblosfor aerial victories over two ME-110's and a FW-190.
The 100th Bomb Group earned the nickname "The bloody Hundredth" because of the high casualty rate suffered by the unit in it's many combat missions over Europe.
There is evidence ofa previous squadron patch.
The names of targets are on the bombs, but are hard to show in photos.
This is an incredible jacket and one of the best! Very good condition, leather still supple.
