Sceletium Tortuosum, otherwise known as Kanna, is a genus of mesembrine and mesembranol containing plant, first identified by the Hottentot tribesmen of the Southern African Kalahari desert. It has been utilized since the 16thcentury, primarily as an agent of pleasure, and was often for ritual purposes, combined with other shamanic herbs. This plant may have been useful due to its initially stimulating properties, which could suppress the appetite and help ward off pain and fatigue experienced on long travels through the desert. Modern studies indicate the herb is a re-uptake inhibitor of Serotonin - the main neuro-chemical associated with good mood. This in turn allows serotonin to accumulate, and subsequently increases melatonin, required for good sleep.
