1561 Ruscelli Map - Tabula Africae III

Claudius Ptolemy, an Alexandrine Greek, is probably the greatest of all early geographers. Working out of Alexandria in the first century AD he wrote a geography that was only published in Europe in the mid 1400's. His work provided the first real printed maps and he was held in such high regard that few attempted to correct these thousand plus year old descriptions until the mid 1500's. This map comes from Ruscelli's 'Ptolemaeus La Geografia' which published new (Tabula Nova) mapsalong withmaps based on Ptolemy's writings.

Thisengravingof Egypt and Libya from the 1561 edition ofRuscelli'satlas, is one of the Ptolemaic maps.

Places noted include the regions of Marmarica, Aegiptus, Thebae, the centres of Alexandria, Menphiso, Sirtis Magna, Berenice, Arsinoie, and the Nile River and Delta, and the Gulf of Suez. The interior is illustrated with mountains, rivers, and lakes.

The map measures 9.5" by 7.5" with a centrefold (as issued), has later outline hand colouring, and is in fairlygood condition, with browning and discolouration of the paper, and transference of the engraving across the folds.

Themap is guaranteed to be over 440 years old.
