1598 Magini Map -'Tabula Europae VI', 'Tabula Europae Quinta'

Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) was an Italian mathematician, cartographer and Professor of Astronomy in Bologna. He is best known for editing an edition of Claudius Ptolemy's 'Geographia' in 1596 -this single page with one map on each side comes froma1598 edition of that work and was engraved by Girolamo Porro.

'Tabula Europae VI'includes includes Sardinia, Corsicaand Sicily, and has very fine detail naming the Roman provinces and many towns and cites, as well as many small islands. The topography is finely illustrated.There are two delightful illustrations of sea monsters.

'Tabula Europae Quinta' has fine detail totheregions ofRhaetia, Noricum, Pannonia, Illyria, Liburnia, Dalmatia with many towns and cities noted. In Italy,Rome, Genoa, Venice, and Neapolis are nicely shown, and there is acharmingillustration of a sea monster in the Mediterranean.

The maps bothmeasure 5" by 6.5" (one on each side ofa single full page with text), have wash hand colouring,andare in very good condition. There is dark browning of the page in the upper margin and an upper corner and a spot of dark browning in the lower area of text, but the engraved area of the actual maps is in very good condition.

The map is guaranteed to be over400years old.
