We are so pleased to be offering one of the cleanest, nicest, high-grade Civil War-era Victorian marble-top bedroom set that we’ve ever had. I first saw this set back in 1974 when I helped one of my good friends carry this set out of the original home where it sat since new (110 years), take it up to his house, then tried like heck to buy it from him. He refused, saying it was the nicest set he’d ever owned. For years, I thought about it, and now here it is – right out of a home here in Central Maine. This set stayed in his home until his tragic death a few years back, and his lovely widow offered it to me, knowing how special it was to me. We’re offering many mint-condition items from his estate, including assorted carnival glass, satin glass, wavecrest items, “Gone with the Wind” lamps, and much more. This set came in with some very small chipped pieces on two of the finials, which have been completely repaired. This set has tremendous racetrack molding on it, which is represented by ovals, reverse curves, circles in the middles, and they are on the drawers and doors of both case pieces, on the bed, and even on the side rails of the bed. The things that really stand out, besides the finish and the original condition, are the clusters of hand-carved nuts, berries and leaves on the footboard and headboard. They will blow your mind, and stand out against the original patina. The hardware or handles on the dresser and commode are miniature carved baskets with berries, nuts, fruit and leaves inside each little basket. I can’t remember ever seeing anything like it. The set dates from the 1860s, is in really stunning condition, and every little piece appears to be there. There are no chips or cracks, and the marble is absolutely bright white, like it’s just been highly polished. There is an ogee beveled edge against the beautiful gray and black veins of the marble. Other than those little tiny pieces we fixed on the finials, all I see is that somewhere along the line, a little hole was drilled in the headboard to allow a reading light to be wired through. The only other thing I can see is that on the commode door, when I removed it from my friend’s home, the knob that held the door closed had fallen off. For years it sat half opened, and age got to it, and the door was cupped just a bit. We replaced the knob that looks from the period. Other than that, the set is mind-bogglingly original, right down to the casters on the bedframe, which are always missing!! The set consists of a full-size bed with the hard to find curve footboard that will take a modern-day mattress. My friend had a pillow-top mattress on it when we removed it from the house. A beautiful washstand/commode with intact marble candle shelves and a 13-inch-high marble backsplash and an ogee beveled edge. There is a dresser with three drawers with big circular racetrack molding in the center and a hidden drawer in the center that pulls open to reveal a cleverly disguised hidden compartment. It also has a swivel mirror, which is all original, including the glass, and ditty boxes screwed down into the marble top. The patina is that really rich, luxurious medium amber against the solid black walnut wood. There are only a few veneer panels on top of the mirror and beneath the candle shelves, and the rest is literally solid black walnut. Take the time to study the photos of the nuts and berries. Just to give you an idea, the size of the two nuts on the footboard take up 6 inches of space from left to right, and are4 inches tall, standing out 2 -1/4 inches from the bed itself! These are life sized! The crests are stunning, open pierce carved, and there is a slight difference in the acorn carving on the dresser versus the bed, which was common in those days. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous set. The size of the pieces, starting with the chest of drawers, is 44 inches wide, 19 inches deep, 33 inches to the marble top, and 91 inches high to the top of the mirror crest. The colors in the wood of this dresser are amazing, the handles are wonderful, and the marble is just beautiful. The washstand is 33 inches wide, 19 inches deep, 31 inches to the marble top, and 44 inches to the top of the backsplash. It features hand-cut dovetail, racetrack molding, and those great handles. The bed measures 58 inches wide, the headboard is 81 inches high, and the footboard is 40 inches high. The inside dimensions, for mattress purposes, are 56 inches wide, and 75 inches long. The bed has a curved footboard, racetrack molding on the curves across the front, and just to give you an idea of the quality, that top crown piece you see is 5 inches thick! I’ve owned thousands of beds in my 40 years of being in the business, and I’ve never seen carved clusters like this. I could go on and on about this set. Back in the day, the better the set, the faster it sold. I desperately wanted this set, and sadly it came about like it did. However, I’m glad to have the opportunity to purchase and sell it to someone who will appreciate it as much as I do and my friend did. You’re purchasing a set that all came out of one home back in 1974, and has now come out of one home, once again. Please email us with any questions about this very special set.
