W. Herbert Burk was the son of Rev. Jesse Y. Burk, the pastor of Old St. Peter\'s Church in Clarksboro, NJ. He attended the Philadelphia Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church and earned a bachelor\'s degree in divinity from the University of Pennsylvania, eventaully becoming the rector of All Saints Church in Norristown, PA. It was from this pulpit that he delivered a speech on George Washington\'s birthday in 1903 on what he envisioned as a roadside chapel that would be a memorial to George Washington in Valley Forge. His original barnboard chapel even received the endorsement of President Theodore Roosevelt. He became the founder of the Washington Memorial Chapel and its first rector. He also decided that the chapel must have its own cemetery, which he was seen grading with a mule-drag. He was also the founder and curator of the Valley Forge Museum of American History, the founder and president of the Valley Forge Historical Society, the founder of the National Washington Memorial Church, and the inventor of the Pews of Patriotism, and received the Philadelphia Civic Award. He is buried near the western exit of the cemetery he founded. For more information on the Rev.
