IRON, SHIP BOARDING GRAPNEL. ATTACHED TO A ROPE, THESE HOOKS WERE THROWN OVER
THE GUNWALES [GUNNELS] OF THE WOODEN SHIP BEING ATTACKED AND THE HULLS DRAWN
TOGETHER PRIOR TO A BOARDING ATTEMPT.. THE SHIP THEN TAKEN AS A PRIZE AND WITH A PRIZE CREW ABOARD, SAILED BACK TO PORT WHERE IT AND THE CARGOWAS SOLD AND THE PROCEEDS DISTRIBUTED AMONG THE CREW.. DURING THE CIVIL WAR
BLOCKADE, EVERY EFFORT WAS MADE TO CAPTURE RATHER THAN DESTROY THE BLOCKADE
RUNNER. TOWED OR TAKEN BACK TO PORT BY A PRIZE CREW, THE SHIP AND IT'S CONTENTS
WERE SOLD AT PREVALING PRICES AND THE MONEY DIVIDED AMONG THE CREW OF THE UNION
SHIP. THE SOUTH IN NEED OF SHIPS WITH WHICH TO ATTACK NORTHERN SHIPPING ALSO
STRIVED TO CAPTURE NORTHERN VESSELS THAT THEY COULD CONVERT TO SOUTHERN RAIDERS.
THIS IS A STRONGLY MADE GRAPNEL OF 3/8 INCH IRON. ALL THREE LEGS WERESPLIT FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF SQUARE IRON STOCK.
