Absolutely gorgeous........... large(22" diameter) copper cauldron cooking/washing bowl
I love the look of stamped number "20" on the iron handle straps
Notice the unique head shape of the hand wrought rivets on the iron handleIncredible patina, much character including nicks, dents, scratches. Beautiful verdigris(green corrosion), reddish tarnish, many lovely natural colors in this bowl
Finely executed dovetail interlocking joinery in excellent condition(see photos) The dovetail joinery runs around the bowl horizontally near the middle. There is also a dovetail joint vertically which extends from the rim of the bowl to the horizontal joint
This dovetail joinery method is also called "cramped". In the case of this copper bowl/kettle it shows wide dovetails that are irregularly spaced, made prior to some tools which allowed more uniform joinery. The joinery on this bowl would have made the dovetails each side hammered to about 1/2 the copper thickness and then they wedge/slide together, like interlaced fingers. From that point they are hammered smooth, then the joint was then filled by soldering/brazing.This bowl shows very fine craftsmanship, you will also notice the hammered hand wrought texture(honey comb design/texture)that is where the copper was hand wrought into shape, amazing and it still looks superb today!
I restored the finish & polished the copper bowl and the iron handles. Everything was sealed with many clear coats...now in a beautiful preservation state maintaining all the rich character & patina
The bowl will set fairly level but it is a round bottom of course it is not rock solid stable, this kettle likely was held by iron chains suspended from a iron hook/tripod over a fire
The handles are perfectly secure, there is absolutely no wiggle, jiggle or movement in the rivets/iron handles, another sign of excellent craftsmanship
Upon a detailed inspection, I found no cracks or gaps in the copper anywhere on the bowl including the dovetail joinery.
I filled this with water, it holds about 10 1/2 gallons, there were no leaks
This will look fantastic with any decor including Colonial, Primitive or Federal to name a few
This is a wonderful Historic piece ready to place and enjoy, it will get rave reviews from all who see it
What a story this copper bowl could tell, you will love this fine antique
