1766 CORK SHIP Letter Portugal to London via Ireland COUNTRY & Bishop Marks

1766 (12 Jan) Pre-stamp entire to Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 1st Baronet (10 October 1717 – 20 July 1807), also 11th of Duntreath, was a Scottish politician, Member of Parliament for Dunbartonshire.

Sent from Oporto, Portugal from the Captain of the Honourable Artillery Company Oporto, arrived 15 March 1766, via Cork and Dublin. The Artillery Company was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1537 by King Henry VIII and is the second oldest military organisation in the world (behind the Vatican’s Pontifical Swiss Guard)

COUNTRY mark in Black - Applied in Dublin on letters travelling to London Used 1748 - 1781

SHIP CORK mark in Black - Applied in CORK Used 1761- 1776

Charges of 4d and 5d cancelled by two Crown marks in Red - Inspectors marks

Bishop Mark in Black - Of the Foreign Post Office

1/9d Ia by hand = In All
