A collection of The Works of Dr. Jonathan Swift, (Volume I).
From the Editor's Preface: "The works of Dr. Jonathan Swift have been universally admired, and have passed through many editions, both in England and Ireland."
"No pains of expense have been spared to render this a complete and correct edition of the Works of the celebrated Dean of St. Patrick's"
Jonathan Swift, as Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, produced many sermons during his tenure from 1713 to 1745.
Although Swift is better known today for his secular writings such as Gulliver's Travels, A Tale of the Tub, or The Drapier's Letters, Swift was known in Dublin for his sermons that were delivered every fifth Sunday.
Of these sermons, Swift wrote down thirty-five, of which twelve have been preserved. In his Sermons Swift attempted to impart traditional Church of Ireland values to his listeners in a plain manner.
In a calf binding with paper-covered boards and faded paper label on the spine. Externally, a trifle rubbed with scratches and marks to the boards. Corners are worn. Joints are weak. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Front hinge failed. Pages are browned with some minor scattered foxing. There is an old ink inscription to recto of front free-end paper, dated 1897,and an ink inscription to the front pastedown. Overall: GOOD ONLY.
