This important American Revolutionary War Almanac is titled in part “George’s Cambridge Almanack or, The Essex Calendar, for the Year of our Redemption, 1776 : Being Leap-Year, the Sixteenth of the reign of George III, from the Creation of the World, According to the Best History 5724, From the Horrid Popish High Church Jacobite Plot 80; and the Fifth Year of the Bloody and Unnatural Civil War in America Commenced by the British King's or Ministerial Troops. Containing all Things Necessary, Useful and Fitting for the Work. Calculated according to art, and fitted for the meridian of Cambridge, New-England, lat. 42’ 25o but may, without any sensible error, serve for most of the other colonies on the continent of America. ... : To Which is Annexed, by Particular Desire and for the Use of the Gentlemen Officers and Soldiers in the American Army, Narratives of the Concord and Bunker Fights." This exceptionally rare and important, American Almanac measures approx. 4 1/2” x 6 3/4”, contains 14 pages (of 18 called for - lacking the final leaf and the majority of the penultimate leaf).
Besides the usual Almanac content of lunar calendars, tides, sun rise and set times, holidays, etc. this Almanac features a detailed and graphic description of the Battles at Concord and Lexington as well as a listing of the American Minutemen killed during these Battles. Also included is the majority of a poem by General Joseph Warren who was killed at Bunker Hill. The Almanac lacks the final 2 leaves which included a near full page portrait of General Warren on the back cover and an account of his death at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
WorldCat finds less than a handful of Institutions holding of an original copy of this Almanac in any edition and we could find only a single example that has sold at sale in the past 10 years - a complete but trimmed example of this same edition which sold for over $5000.00.
This exceptionally rare, 1776 American Almanac with Revolutionary War content is self-bound as issued. The front cover is intact but as stated above the Almanac lacks the final leaf and the vast majority of the penultimate leaf with only a small portion of the upper edge of this leaf present. The present, interior pages are generally in very good condition - complete but with edge wear. There is no loss to text on any of the present pagesalthough there is some edge chipping and short edge tears. We have included images of all of the pages of the Almanac below and ask that those interested in offerding please take the time to view the scans for a good indication of the content and condition of this fascinating Almanac.
