1782, Captain Obadiah Clough, Revolutionary War Payorder Signed For Sale
This is a wonderful original document, dated 1782, a Revolutionary War payorder to Captain Obadiah Clough....signed by William Mosely, Eleazer Wales and Hezekiah Rogers. Document is 4x6, in overall fine shape.
- Capt. Clough was from the town of Killingly in Windham, County. It appears after the war Killingly was divided into two towns. The new one being Thompson and Obadiah Clough was an early representative from Thompson to the general assembly.
Hezekiah Rogers, who countersigns, was a delegate to the Conn. Convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution. During the war he was an aide-de-camp to General Jedediah Huntington, and was among the officers at Valley Forge with Washington.
Eleazer Wales,. son of Ebenezer Wales and Esther Smith. He was born Apr 20 or 30 1732 in Windham, Ct. Died 8/20/1794 in Chester, Ma or in Union, Ct. Graduated from Yale in 1753. Studied medicine and later theology. Licensed to preach. Commissioned Ensign 1777-1778. Lieutenant in Capt. Knowlton's company, Israel Putnams 3rd Conn. Regiment. Served in the 3rd Rgiment of the Conn. Line under Col. Saumel Wyllys. Later at Arnold's attack on New London Sept 6, 1781 where he was captured and carried of by the British. Married Sarah Nortoh, Dec. 4, 1757. Children were Caroline, Sally, and Horatio. Died 2/24/1807.
