1782 Revolutionary War Pay Table Handwritten Connecticut Continental Army Signed For Sale
You are offerding on a rare Colonial Revolutionary War American printed and handwritten promissory document dated June 1st, 1782!
This document is a Promise of Payment to Charles London of the CT Line of the Continental Army from CT State Treasurer John Lawrence, in order to pay 12 pounds 15 Shillings for service in the War.
Additional signatures include John Lawrence, William Lawrence, R Butler, and John Jeffrey.
Financing the Revolution laid a heavy burden upon each colony, especially
those that balked at levying taxes. In order to meet immediate needs, such as
wages, the colonies relied upon wealthy revolutionists, foreign loans, and taxes
and gifts from abroad. Connecticut issued promissory notes such as this.
Issuing paper money was only a temporary solution, and worthless without specie
or gold and silver backing. The U.S. would establish its standard monetary
system in 1791.Note the beautiful printing around the order, with the words 'For The Payment of the Connecticut Line.' GREAT CT HISTORY!
This sale is for a great early American
document on hand laid printed paper. Handcut with varied borders for validity, a bit of edgewear and the hole punch for proof of redemption; in great shape with legible & beautiful handwriting and attractive woodcut printing. Measures 7.5" x 4". As shown. Good luck!
