1783 Spanish Silver 2 Reale El Cazador Shipwreck NGC Highest Graded
Description:
This sale is for a 1783 Silver 2 Reale struck at the Mexico City Mint from the famed El Cazador Shipwreck that has been certified by NGC. This coin had been minted just months before it sunk on board the El Cazador. The El Cazador left Veracruz Mexico on January 11, 1784 heading to the port of New Orleans loaded with 450,000 Spanish reales weighing 19 tons. The silver was mostly freshly minted 1783 dated coins struck in Mexico City with a few older silver coins also on board. At that time Spain owned the Louisiana Territory and had intended to use the silver on the El Cazador to stabilize the territory's fledgling economy. The loss of the El Cazador was such a blow to Spain that it was forced to sell Louisiana to France for a small sum. Just three years later France sold the vast territory to US President Thomas Jefferson for 15 million dollars in effect doubling the size of the United States. Then, on August 2, 1993, a fishing trawler named "Mistake" snagged some debris on the ocean floor 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. When the crew hoisted the net and dumped the contents on the deck, they found the net was filled with silver coins. This sale is for the NGC Certified coin shown.
