This item is a wonderful, original letter dated 1789, New York, where General William Irvine has written to Major William Alexander at Carlisle, Pennsylvania regarding the many military land bounties that are being applied for, though the soldiers do not know what to do with them. Irvine will be sending these along by General Knox, the war office now giving him all the time needed to get this done. Letter is two pages, 8x10, addressed outer leaf with FREE FRANK of Irvine and straight line New York Cancel. Minor faults, else in overall good condition.

William Irvine (November 3, 1741 – July 29, 1804) was an Irish-American physician, soldier, and statesman from Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Irvine was born near Enniskillen, County Fermanagh in Ireland. He served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army and represented Pennsylvania in both the Continental Congress (1787–88) and the United States House of Representatives (1793–1795). During the war, he convinced Colonel William Crawford to come out of retirement and lead an expedition against Indians in villages along the Sandusky River, which ended in Crawford\'s brutal execution.

Major William Alexander, served through the Revolutionary War. He was commissioned Captain, 7th Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental line, June l, 1776, ranking from May 18, and April 16, 1780 was promoted Major of the 3d Pennsylvania Regiment. He retired July I, 1783. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati.
