1792 Norwich Norfolk England Ngc Ms64 Tradesman's Or Condor Token, Great Britain:
1792 NORWICH NORFOLK England NGC MS64 Tradesman's or CONDOR Token, GREAT BRITAIN
This is a beautiful Near Gem, Brilliant Uncirculated Halfpenny “Tradesman's or Condor” Token from the City of Norwich in Norfolk County, England. It is dated 1792, and was struck for a John Harvey of Norwich.
In researching this I found that there was a John Harvey of Thorpe who lived in and was the Mayor of Norwich in 1792. He was born May 5, 1755 and died on February 9, 1842. This could very well have been struck for his business.
The Token has been certified genuine and professionally graded Mint State 64 Brown by the prestigious third party grading service, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation or NGC.
In the late 1700’s there was a severe shortage of small change in England. Royal coppers had last been struck in 1775. Coins in circulation were badly worn and there were many counterfeits. In 1787 many merchants, manufacturers, shopkeepers, workhouse officials and others began striking private tokens that were welcomed and circulated as money.

Front of the Holder
Back of the Holder
Obverse: 1 • 7 • 9 • 2 • The Arms of the City of Norwich. Interestingly, the Dalton-Hammer book lists this as the Obverse side but NGC opted to encapsulate the Reverse side up.
Reverse: Man working a Loom.
Edge: Incuse Letters: JOHN HARVEY OF NORWICH • X X X X •
The Token: A choice near gem uncirculated example, NGC correctly calls it brown but there is a considerable amount of original red on the obverse. The reverse has some beautiful green and blue color and both sides are quite lustrous. Even though it has been professionally graded and authenticated, grading is subjective so please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
