18th Century British Provincial Conder Token
From the county ofLancashire DH-44a, 1794almost uncirculated, was struck, coin turn, as anon-regal token during the same time period as the genuine trade tokens. It was made to deceive by closely resembling the genuine trade token.Obverse profile of John of Gaunt (1340-1399), the 1st Duke of Lancaster (Generally non-regal tokens may have a light strike or inaccurate spelling, an incorrect legend, device or edge, and they were certainly never intended to be redeemed.) In this case, it has a false edge that reads \"PAYABLE at LONDON OR DUBLIN\", but where in those cities? The token doesn\'t tell us. And why would a Lancaster token be accepted in Dublin? Another clue! But, it resembles an authentic token enough that it would have been accepted in trade everywhere. Workers were happy to receive any small change at all and most eager to spend it as fast as they got it. This counterfeit token was struck to go into circulation and stay there being handed off again and again. However, this token barely circulated. It must have been snatched up by a coin collector where it stayed safe in a coin cabinet, I imagine, for a very long time. And it must have been passed from one coin collector to the next over the years in order for it to arrive here 220 years later in such nice condition, which is unusual. Most non-regal issues are found in the lower grades. Who made this token? We don\'t know. Who saved this token? We don\'t know that either. But, that is part of the charm and mystery surrounding the non-regal tokens. There are only 19 genuine trade tokens out of 60+ varieties in the John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster series. All the others, such as this one, are counterfeits or mules, some with eight or more different edgeswhich is what makes this series so fun to collect, and some are extremely rare. But unlike those or U.S. coinage of the same period, this one won\'t break your bank. Some tiny insignificant field marks, otherwise a beautifully rosy brown tone, nearly uncirculated NON-REGAL token. Nice full detailing!
