1797, Child Folk Art Letter, Connecticut Saltonstall Family For Sale
This item is a wonderful original letter dated 1797, where Winthrop Saltonstall has written a finely printed letter to William W Saltonstall regarding being a good boy and finding a bow that has gone missing since his visit. Letter also refers to saying hello to William, Johnston, Quash and Violet....Quash is a New England name freqently found to given to negro servants in the 18th Century. Embossed insignia at lower left, addressed outer leaf, tipped in slip on verson stating the letter was written from Winthrop to William and that at the time William was just 4 years old.
Letter is 8x12, minor ink burns, else quite a fine letter. The Salstonstall history is deep, with many names being the same through the generations, William W. Salstonstall was born William Wanton, son Gurdon & Hannah, born Jan. 10, 1793, died in 1862.. There were three Winthrops that could fit the writer of this letter, Winthrop, son Winthrop & Ann, b. Feb. 20, 1775......
Winthrop, had negro servant Hetty, b. Dec. 22, 1777.....
Winthrop, had Scipio, son Juno, servants, b. July 22, 1788......
