Hello you are offerding on the rare 1797 Fusee pocket watch featured in this listing. Please find this watch in excellent cosmetic and working condition with the following report and details. The report below was generated October 29, 1997 by Fred Powell Antiquarian Horology in Middlebury Vermont.

“This is a 19th century English pocket watch, with paired-cased in Sterling, and signed “B. Dalrymple, No.5797, London running nicely.

DISCUSSION OF THE WATCH

The various hallmarks are: Lion = sterling, Leopard head = London, B = 1797 (this provides us a firm date as late 18th century confirming the date estimated by style), and JB = John Baker of London Who is listed in Wyler “Old Silver” in 1770. The very large second hand is very rare in the late 18th century; it is much more common in the second quarter of the 19th century. The Watch papers are in relatively good condition, considering their age and the quality of paper; the outer paper shows a Connecticut maker/dealer/repairman. The excellent Bullseye Crystal is almost certainly original. The purpose of the bull’s-eye is on certain, as some assert that it was A consequence of the production process for crystals in that period, while others claim that it’s purpose is beauty (White castle nice circular pattern on the face). The grotesque masue at the knack of the balance cock deserves careful examination with a magnifier! The rotating regulator is also consistent with a late 18th century date.

PROBLEMS and ACTIONS

... Fred Powell Antiquarian Horologist continues “as you will recall I sent this piece to Philip Priestly, in England, for restoration. I quote from his report:

“some of the parts are not original… escape wheel caught on hairspring collect…”

2.1 - Stabilize potence-end and make new outer – pivot holder for escape wheel

2.2- adjust potence dovetail position

2.3- replace escape wheel

2.4- Re-cut contrate wheel as it was damaged by the stop mechanism

2.5- remove rust from and polish pinions

2.6- clean dial and wash out dirt from crack

2.7- Hairspring in it was not of correct type; replaced with the correct hairspring.

2.8- just regulator rack, original did not fit

2.9- New pendant bow

2.10- replace hinge pin with a brass pin (they never used steel hinge pins nor assembly pins, as they knew the steel would corrode in place).

2.13- New seconds hand

2.14- Repaired stop work lever
