1799 Guthrie Map - The United States of America
William Guthrie was a Scottish geographer and historian who arguably produced the most successful geographical work in English from the 1770's to the 1820's with his 'New Geographical, Historical and Commercial Grammar', first published in the year of his death, 1770. Each edition contained a series of world maps, first by Thomas Kitchin and later by a variety of cartographers.
This map comes from thatedition of 1799.
Thismap ofthe United Statesis an early, desirable map witha pre-Louisiana purchase geography. It namesthe original thirteen states, as well as the states of Vermont andKentucky (the 15states arein the legend on the left); as well as naming the areas of:Tennessee Government, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio Company, Army Lands,New JerseyCompany.All theland west of the Mississippi is Lousiana. The many native territories are named. The majortowns and cities are noted,and there isfine detail tothe topography.
The map measures 7.5" by 7", hastwo folds (as issued), hasoriginal outline hand colouring, and is in fairlygood condition - there is extensive creasing and wrinkling of the paper. The paper has been cleaned.
Themap is guaranteed to be over200 years old.
