17th Century Candlestick with rare Drum or Reel Base:

A Rare Brass Candlestick of Spanish or Dutch origin andcast around 1650

This candlestick was likely cast in Spain but could have been produced in the Netherlands as well. There is some affinity with the capstantypes where the drip tray extends over the \"drum\" or \"reel\" base.

Just below the socket is a bowl shape swelling similar to the Heemskerk candlestick of the period.

A narrow raised mouldingalong the rim of the dish-shaped drip tray helps to date this candlestick. Typically, thestem has been made with a short spigot which is peened beneath the base. That spigot is apparent inthe example offered.

The candlestickis about5 inches tall andthe baseis about5.25 inches in diameter.

The candlestickappears in excellent original condition with wonderful patina all around the bottom.
