Here is the complete 3 volume set of Robertson's famed The History of America, comprising the extraordinary consequences of the expansion of Europe and the growth of colonial empires in the "New World" America. The first edition, which appeared in 1777, told the story of the discovery of America and the conquests of Mexico and Peru, using original sources. Robertson had also intended to include in his account the history of North America, but when the movement for American independence broke out, he decided to publish the work as it was. It wasn't until the the 1796 edition, that material on Virginia and New England was, in fact, added and appears here, giving a glimpse into the early colonial life of the Settlers of North America.
The History of America has five major focuses: the explorations of Columbus and his epigoni in the West Indies, the conquest of Mexico, the conquest of Peru, the general anthropology of American aboriginal cultures, and the histories of the colonies in Virginia (to 1688), and New England (to 1652). These 3 volumes contain everything from the details of the long voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, Christopher Columbus, Montezuma, Cortes, the manners and customs of the Native Americans, slavery, intercontinental trade, life in the united colonies, and much more.
With its dramatic sweep of narrative, combined with a provocative confrontation of two very different stages of civilization [Spanish and Native American] and a prose that was more flexible and evocative than that of his earlier books, the History of America is often regarded as Robertson's most interesting, original, and even Romantic work. Howes calls the work the most highly regarded secondary source of its time.
