Daniel O'Connell Irish Political Leader
1800's Oil Painting A fine oil painting of Daniel O'Connell (“The Liberator”) 1775-1847.
Set in an ornate gilded frame the painting captures the perceptive countenance of the great man.
Also it shows Daniel wearing his great coat with the Irish Harp emblem pinned thereon.
He held outdoor rallies up and down the country giving great speeches
on the lack of rights of the Irish citizen.
He fought passionately and tirelessly for those rights.
He wanted an Irish parliament.
He also wanted to and succeeding in repealing the penal laws which deprived an
Irish Catholic of a priest to give a blessing at his burial.
There was no place of burial for Catholics until he established Glasnevin Cemetery
February 21st 1832 where both Irish Catholics and Protestants could be buried with dignity
It was famously open to "All religions and no religion"
